Happy 10th Birthday

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Louis Ghost Chair. Designed by Philippe Starck and distributed by Kartell, this modern chair has managed to transcend tastes and styles. I find it fascinating how design evolves and how pieces of furniture become design icons. When we look back, designers like Le Corbusier, Charles and Ray Eames, Rens Risom and many more have all designed pieces of furnture that decades later we are still swooning over and that still feel so current in the aesthetics of today.  This is why I find it fascinating that after only ten years the Louis Ghost has become an icon (let me be clear that I do not think that this chair is necessarily on the same level as say the Eames Lounge chair, however it ticks a lot of the boxes that make a piece of furniture iconic).

The thing that I find fascinating about the Ghost is that it has an incredible ability to meld into any interior. Whether a traditional or modern space, due to the design and simplicity of material, this chiar works well really no matter where it lives.  This being said I enjoy it much more in more timeless, traditional interiors that seem to balance out it's stark modernity.  While they now come in a large and small size as well as many different solid and opaque colorus, my favorite is still the classic clear.  As you can see from the images below, it really is a ghost.

If you have a moment and are interested for it's 10th anniversary, Kartel have taken photos of the Louis Ghost all around the world.  This one from London does pull at my heart strings a little, but many more can be seen in this video here.

  1. Wow I had no idea that the ghost chair was so young! It's iconic status had me thinking it was an oldie! I love this chair so much.
