Gift Guide Part 3 : Her

Here it is, the 2013 gift guide for Her.

1. Stacking Ring. Like copper and brass in interiors, rose gold has become a HUGE trend in fashion over the past year.  I love the sparkle and detail of this ring from Leif Shop.

2. Shearling lined slippers. There is nothing nicer than slipping on a pair of cozy slippers to keep ones feet warm over the holidays and these moccasins from J Crew are just the perfect pair.

3. Stella McCartney bag.  I have adored the Falabella bags forever - one of my design must-haves, therefore it just had to make it's way onto the list.

4. Little Ceramic Pot.  I always have things that are just stowed on my bedside table and this little White and Gold pot from Etsy shop UpInTheAirSomewhere is just the perfect little thing to have holding for all my bits and pieces.

5. Clear Frame Glasses.  While I know that this item isn't for everything it is something on my list this year and so I just had to include.  I know that the trend has been for thick, dark plastic frames, and while I do have a pair like that, I now really want some clear plastic ones like these from Derek Cardigan.  Only question is can I pull them off??

6. Leather and Canvas zip pouch. I love things being monogrammed and these little zippered pouches are a great accessory for whatever one might need.

Gift Guide Part 2 : Him

Welcome to the second instalment of our 2013 gift guide with suggestions for Him.

1. Leather Flask. The winter cold weather makes us just want to be warm.  Well, with this stylish Paul Smith leather flask you can get that extra little bit of warmth.

2. Tie Clip.  J Crew men have a great modern tie clip for the distinguished man. I love the simplicity and change in texture - not to mention that it is the shape of a tie!

3. Monogram Pijamas.  What better way to spend the holidays than lounging around in a set of PJs. 

4. Analog Braun watch. With a simple, clean face and leather strap, this watch is suitable for the modern gentleman.

5. Hermes Tie.  This is the quintessential gift for the man in your life. What else is there to say - it's an Hermes silk tie, it speaks for itself!

6. iPad and iPhone leather skin. There are so many different cases and protective skins for technology. I think that there is something so simple and stylish about these leather sinks for your i gadgets without being too bulky.

Gift Guide Part 1 : Home

Well, it's that time of the year again! Hard to believe we are already in full holiday mode and so here comes my Gift Guide! What better a way to start the 2013 series than with yummy treats for the Home! Hope you enjoy, find some inspiration and don't forget to check back for guides to gifts for Him, Her and new this year Pets. 

1. Colourful Honeycomb Coasters from Leif Shop. I love a little bit of colour in a home accessory, especially when it's in a pixilated pattern, and these hand-painted coasters offer just that bit of punch to your coffee table.

2. Teacup and Small Tray.  This simple yet extremely elegant set would be perfect for a spot of afternoon tea!

3. Almoco Copper Flatware. This year has been one of brass and copper in the world of interiors and I just love the little edge this cutlery gives.  

4. Grey Felt Storage Bin from DWR. I just love the simplicity of the design, durability of material and really can picture this in any interior.

5. Brushtroke Glasses. In a colour palette designed by Le Corbusier, these glasses are produced by Lobmeyr and are to me, perfection.

6. Restorations Hardware Italian Tipped Sheets. I love these - the simple edge detail adds a little contemporary twist without losing the crisp clean look of white linens.

Items of Interest - Part 3

British artist Sam Orlando Miller's work has been in the design world for a few years now,  and while perusing Gallery FUMI in search of inspiration for my meeting I came across his mirrors once again and just had to include them in this weeks feature.  His play with different mirror finishes and colors, shapes as well as the positive and negative makes his work truly unique.  These are gallery quality pieces (and come with a price tag to match) each is hand-crafted and after seeing them in person, more stunning than you can imagine. As with most coveted design items these days, there are knockoffs a plenty (Restoration Hardware and West Elm to name a couple). So if you just have to have one, there are budget versions available, however don't expect the same detail, depth or craftsmanship - that is reserved for Sam's pieces.

Into the Fire

Every once in a while I come across a piece of design while searching for something completely different and it renders me speechless.  Today is no different! While on 1stDibs looking for some interesting chairs for a project down in the West Village, I came across these Giacometti andirons and had to stop and take a moment to admire.  To me they are the epitome of form and functional.  Sold through Wyeth here in New York these 1950’s pieces are made of guilt bronze and iron.  I love the shape, materiality and scale of these pieces, and although made almost 70 years ago they still feel so current and really would make a statement in any fireplace - you’ll have to leap over the $24,000 price tag to take these home though!

Gift Guide Part 3 : Him

Welcome to my third gift guide installment with gifts for him.

1. Ball Bearing Cufflinks. I have always had a fascination with cufflinks and think that they are a great opportunity for men to shed a little self style in an otherwise monotonous business attire.

4. Creed Cologne.  There are many different scents to chose from - so there is something for every man, and for me, it is a little memory of england.  These are traditional scents, some of which have been around since the brand started in 1760.
5. The Modern Gentleman.  This was a staple gift of mine a couple of years ago and a new edition has been released. This is a great gift for men of all ages!
6. A canvas and leather weekender.  This is a staple that I think every man needs in their wardrobe and I just love the bright colours of this one.

Inspired By

Fall! It is hard to ignore that the seasons are changing.  Although the weather seems to be holding out now the colder days have hit Manhattan and so it is only a matter of time until it turns for good.  I am worried for what the colder weather will be like this winter, but for now I am putting that out of my head to enjoy the amazing colours of the fall. Since it has been a while since I had an Inspired By post, I thought it would be good to ring in the week with my favourite feelings of fall!

I love these chairs and know that there is nothing particularly autumn-like about them, however I love that they are upholstered in an old Hudson Bay blanket and they just feel so warm and cozy.

Sit and Read

Fall and getting into the colder seasons for me has always been about cable knit. I think that it is great that knit no longer only means sweaters - whether lining for hunter boots, or a little texture for your home, it is a comforting and cozy and reminds me of the change in season and wardrobe.

Terrariums

Every once in a while I like to post about design trends that interest me.  I have been coveting a certain trend and it has occurred to me that I seem to have a thing for plants and housing plants indoors as my latest love falls perfectly into this category (see previous post on the subject here).  We live in an apartment and so the idea of a terrarium is pure perfection - I can have a mini garden right in my apartment, and as the weather gets cooler, it is a perfect little garden oasis anywhere. LOVE!

Lanterns!  I have been missing London recently - must be the back to work blues after our trips there this summer - and wanted to share with you one of my favourite pieces of lighting done best by the British.  In the time I spent working in the UK, I did a lot of research and sourcing of lanterns for use on our projects.  This hasn't stopped since working here in New York, and in fact, I seem to be using them on all my projects lately. I am a fan of simplicity rather than all the extra details that one can find and tend to air on the side of over-scaled for ceiling fixtures as to me it gives a sense of presence in the space.  Lanterns also make me think of fall with their warm glow - especially when there are candles inside - and as today feels like the turning of the seasons here I thought it only fitting. Happy 5th of July all! Yesterday was Independence Day here in the US, and it was very strange having a day off right in the middle of the week - not going to complain, however I really feel that I should have taken advantage and either taken the couple of days before or after as an extended vacation.  Anyways, back to reality, and back to work on this hot Thursday.  I am wrapping up this project in Aspen, and as I posted here, I'm in the middle of accessory shopping and thinking about how the project is going to be styled for the client hand-over.  Lately I have found myself going back to basics with websites such as Tine K Home. They are a Danish home accessory supplier (to the trade only I am afraid), however not only do they make great home goods, but their have a simple palette and an incredible eye for styling.  Definitely worth a look at their site and their blog for all those creative holes that need to be filled!
