Christophe Côme

Happy April to all.  Well it has been quite the month, and I have to say I'm happy to see the end of March.  I know it has been a while since I posted and thought that a good step back into the blogging world would be through an artist whose work I am currently fascinated with.

Christoph Côme is a Paris based designer who in my opinion is a true craftsman. Working in glass, metal and lavastone, he creates the most incredibly sculptural pieces of furniture and lighting - really more art objects than furnishings.  With a keen eye for design and unique modern takes on form, color and pattern, Côme creates pieces that have the ability to stand alone in any space.  We recently commissioned a piece for a project and I was truly speechless when it was installed. The detailing was perfect, the precision of material was unparalleled and it really is a piece of art.

Writer's Block

The Gifts of Life

Work has been crazy...life has been crazy...and I just can't seem to keep up at the moment. Can anyone else relate? I can't believe how the days all seem to be blending into one and before I know it another week has passed.  I  currently seem to be cursed with the worst bout of writers block which isn't helping - I search for what to write, but the words just don't come!  The inspiration and ideas are there but for some reason I cannot put two thoughts together.  Thank you all for your continued support and readership and I just needed a little break to get my head together.  The past 18 month with Canoe Design have been incredible and I am excited for what the coming months and hopefully years will bring.  I will be back with regular posts starting April 1st and hope that this block will have passed by then too.

Shooting for the Stars

In true New York fashion people make the best of what they have, while always striving for more.  Well this apartment come mansion in TriBeCa fits that m.o. to the tee.  As we all know there isn't much room left on the island so you've got to work with what is available - enter 144 Duane Street.  This 1862 limestone building has been converted into a modern 25,000 square foot palace with a price tag just under $50 million.  Complete with private gym, roof terrace and as many skylights to watch the stars through as possible, this mega townhouse's furnishings are a little to be admired, however the bones are there for sure. Any takers?

The house Jens Risom built

Although prefab is at the forefront of people's minds and design ideals, it is not a new, or even revolutionary phenomenon.  In 1967, danish designer Jens Risom had an A-Frame house built on Block Island, RI completely for pre-ordered parts.  Assembled on his property, this 700 square-foot holiday home housed everything one could need, including furniture designed by Risom himself. At a time where prefab equalled boring, this little cottage proved everyone wrong using materials, forms and the elements of design seemingly lost on the other such homes of the time.  Originally showcased in Life, and recently published in Dwell, this escape  as a homage to the now 97-year-old Risom and his influence on the design world as we know it.
